Use this when you're evaluating a mix of electrical and mechanical inspection tools — specifically thermal cameras, digital calipers, and multimeters. It's built for buying decisions where you need to balance capability, budget, and ease of use. I've organized it into 6 steps. FLIR One Pro (iOS)
This is a phone attachment — 160×120 resolution, works with iPhone. It's handy for quick walkarounds, but the image quality is lower than handheld units. Our maintenance lead called it "useful for triage, not for reports." If you need professional documentation, go with a standalone model like the FLIR E8.
Step 3: Verify the Vendor’s Capability — and Honesty
When I took over purchasing in 2020, I ordered a "comprehensive inspection kit" from a single supplier. Turned out the thermal camera was a Chinese rebrand with no warranty support in the US. The vendor who sold it said they could service it — but when it failed, they ghosted us. Cost us $2,400 in rework and lost rental fees.
Now I ask three questions before any order over $500:
- “Is this your core product category?” If they say “we do everything,” I’m wary. I'd rather hear “FLIR is our specialty — for multimeters, we recommend Fluke.” That honesty earns my trust for the rest.
- “What’s your return policy for DOA units?” Dead-on-arrival happens. A vendor with a clear RMA process is worth a premium.
