What I Learned Buying a FLIR Thermal Camera, a 5810R Refrigerated Centrifuge, and Calipers

March 2024: The List I Wasn't Ready For

In March 2024, I sat in a conference room with our operations director and lab manager. I am the office administrator for a 220-person engineering services company. I manage purchasing for facilities, field teams, and the lab—about $340,000 a year across 14 vendors. I report to operations and finance. Before that meeting, my biggest technical buy was a fleet of laptops.

Then they slid over a list: FLIR thermal camera, a FLIR One thermal camera smartphone attachment, a FLIR Lepton thermal camera module specs request for an R&D prototype, a 5810R refrigerated centrifuge for sample prep, a set of vernier calipers for the maintenance shop, and instructions for how to read Sensus water meter data for monthly facilities checks.

I thought, fine. Get three quotes, compare prices, place orders. That was my first mistake.

The First Quote Looked Great. That Was the Problem.

The first thermal camera quote came back fast and low. I almost clicked approve. Then our electrical lead asked two questions: Is it radiometric? What is the temperature range? I did not know what radiometric meant.

Most buyers focus on per-unit pricing and completely miss the specs that decide whether a tool works in the field. I was that buyer. A cheap thermal camera can make colorful images, but if it does not record actual temperature data, it cannot support a repair decision on a switchgear panel or a motor.

So I slowed down. I asked for datasheets, not just quotes. Specs, invoice, calibration. In that order.

The FLIR One vs. Dedicated Camera Decision

I went back and forth between a dedicated FLIR camera and the FLIR One thermal camera smartphone attachment for almost two weeks. The dedicated camera offered better ergonomics, a wider temperature range, and a screen that works with gloves. The FLIR One offered lower cost and phone integration, which meant junior techs could carry one in a pocket.

Did I want one tool for everyone? No. We ended up with one dedicated FLIR camera for senior techs and two FLIR One attachments for routine checks. That was not the cheapest path. It was the path that reduced the chance of people skipping an inspection because the tool was heavy or locked in a truck.

The Lepton Module Specs Lesson

Our R&D lead asked me to find a FLIR Lepton thermal camera module. I asked suppliers for their best price. Wrong question. He needed to know interface, resolution, frame rate, power draw, radiometric calibration, and SDK support. According to FLIR's published datasheets at flir.com, Lepton modules are available in resolutions such as 80×60 and 160×120, but the exact specs depend on the model and revision. Verify current datasheets before designing anything around a module.

One reseller sent a quote with no current datasheet and no compliance paperwork. I wanted to move fast. Then I remembered 2023, when I found a great price from a new vendor. They could not provide a proper invoice—only a handwritten receipt. Finance rejected the expense report, and I ate $2,400 out of the department budget. I still feel that one.

The 5810R Centrifuge and the Refurbished Question

The lab manager needed a 5810R refrigerated centrifuge. I thought a centrifuge was a centrifuge. She explained that refrigerated models hold samples at a set temperature, and that rotor compatibility, max RCF, capacity, and safety certifications matter more than the sticker price. I have mixed feelings about refurbished lab equipment. On one hand, the savings can be 30-40%. On the other, service history and calibration records are hard to verify. We bought new for the primary lab unit and kept refurbished as a backup option only after the vendor provided a service record. That felt like a reasonable compromise.

Vernier Calipers and the Sensus Meter Read

The maintenance team asked for vernier calipers. This was true 10 years ago when digital calipers had battery and durability issues. Today, many shops still prefer vernier calipers for simple, repeatable checks without batteries—but calibration still matters. A common shop-grade vernier caliper uses a 0.02 mm vernier scale. Teach the team to close the jaws, check zero, read the main scale, then find the matching vernier line. If you skip the zero check, you are guessing.

For facilities, we needed to know how to read a Sensus water meter. According to Sensus guidance at sensus.com, most meters show consumption in gallons or cubic feet. The billing read usually comes from the main odometer digits, while the low-flow indicator helps spot leaks. We now have technicians photograph the meter and upload it to a shared form. AP enters the reading. No more phone tag.

The Order That Finance Killed

I placed the FLIR One and Lepton module order with a low-cost reseller. The price was good. The paperwork was not. They could not provide a tax-compliant invoice or a current datasheet. Finance flagged it. I had to cancel and reorder from an authorized distributor. That added about 10 days.

My operations director was not happy. I looked bad. But we avoided a non-compliant purchase that would have caused a bigger mess later. That is the part I remind myself about when I want to move faster than the process allows.

What I Changed

After that quarter, I built a one-page spec checklist for technical buys. It is not fancy. It just forces the right questions:

  • Thermal cameras: resolution, thermal sensitivity, temperature range, accuracy, radiometric data, software, and calibration.
  • Lepton modules: resolution, frame rate, interface, power, SDK, radiometric calibration, compliance, and lifecycle status.
  • Refrigerated centrifuges: capacity, max RCF, temperature range, rotor compatibility, safety certifications, and service plan.
  • Vernier calipers: range, resolution, accuracy, zero check, thumb lock, case, and calibration certificate.
  • Sensus meter reads: units, odometer digits, low-flow indicator, photo upload, and billing deadline.

We also moved most reorders to a vendor portal. That cut our ordering time from about nine days to four for standard items. The automated process eliminated the data entry errors we used to have. At least, that has been my experience with our most common orders. Custom or regulated items still take longer.

Bottom Line

Efficiency is not just speed. It is fewer reorders, fewer rejected invoices, and fewer people standing around waiting for the wrong tool. The question everyone asks is, what is your best price? The question they should ask is, what is included in that price—and can you provide the datasheet and a compliant invoice?
