Here's my opinion, stated plainly: Most people buy the wrong FLIR thermal camera because they chase specs instead of matching the tool to the job. The $900 Contactor That Should Have Cost $12
My first serious mistake happened in May 2022. We had a recurring overheating issue on a conveyor drive, and I approved the purchase of a FLIR K45 thermal imaging camera with the logic that "if it's rugged enough for firefighters, it's rugged enough for our plant." That logic was exactly backward.
The K45 is designed for fire attack. It's built to survive drops, extreme heat, and zero-visibility environments—and it does that job very well. What it doesn't do, what it was never intended to do, is measure precise temperature differences for predictive maintenance. No emissivity adjustment. No comparative measurement tools beyond basic spot detection. The thermal resolution is intentionally lower because fireground awareness matters more than diagnostic detail.
I used the K45 to scan a 480V motor starter and it flagged a "hot" terminal. The problem: I couldn't tell whether that terminal was at 80°C or 140°C. Those two numbers lead to very different decisions. The K45 told me a problem existed; it just couldn't tell me how urgent it was. I authorized a full contactor replacement—roughly $900 in parts, plus an 8-hour maintenance window that took our crew away from scheduled work. The original contactor was fine. The actual issue was a loose lug on one phase that a decent electrician would have caught in ten minutes with a torque screwdriver.
A detection tool is not the same as a diagnostic tool. The K45 flagged the problem. It just couldn't tell me how urgent it was.
The E86: What "Advanced" Actually Buys You
The FLIR E86 advanced thermal imaging camera is a different animal entirely. It's the camera I use now for bearing temperature checks, breaker scans, and building envelope inspections. The difference isn't just marketing language.
The E86 gives you real measurement capability. Adjustable emissivity—around 0.95 for painted metal and electrical insulation, lower for uncoated copper and aluminum. Delta-T measurement that compares phase-to-phase temperature on three-phase equipment, which is how you spot an unbalanced load before it fails. Spot, area, and isotherm analysis tools. Thermal sensitivity fine enough to catch the subtle rise that signals early bearing wear.
What I mean is that the E86 generates data you can base a maintenance decision on. The K45, outside a fireground context, gives you a thermal image with a best-guess temperature. The E86 gives you a defensible measurement.
I'll also tell you the honest downside: the E86 sits at a different price point entirely. This isn't a buying guide that pretends cost doesn't matter. The E86 is genuinely overkill if you're doing simple residential checks—hunting drafts, finding missing insulation, checking a baseboard heater. For that kind of work, the FLIR One gets you 80% of the value at a fraction of the cost.
I believe in stating limitations upfront, because that's how you actually help someone make a good decision. The E86 is the camera I recommend for industrial electrical and mechanical diagnostics. It's the wrong answer for a lot of other scenarios, and I won't pretend otherwise.
FLIR One: Clip It On, Learn With It, Know When to Stop
The FLIR One thermal camera attachment deserves its own section because it's both the most accessible and the most misunderstood product in FLIR's lineup.
How to use a FLIR One the right way: clean the lens, give it a moment to calibrate, set the emissivity to match what you're pointing at, and hold your phone steady about a foot or two from the target. It's excellent for walkthroughs, catching obvious thermal anomalies, and learning what "normal" looks like before abnormality shows up. HVAC technicians just entering the field—this is a legitimate first tool.
Here's the warning, though. I've seen technicians make confident, costly decisions based on FLIR One images, and that's where the trouble starts. The FLIR One's sensor is roughly 160×120, and its temperature calibration isn't at the level you need for preventative maintenance decisions.
In 2021, I used a FLIR One for a quick motor starter scan. The image looked completely clean—uniform signature, no hot spot. A handheld IR thermometer on the same terminal registered at 96°C. Maybe 92, maybe 97, I won't pretend to recall the exact digit. The point is: well past the danger threshold. The FLIR One simply couldn't resolve that level of thermal contrast. If I'd trusted the image, we could have lost a motor on a critical line.
That experience cemented the rule I still carry: use the FLIR One to find potential issues, and use a proper instrument to confirm them. It's a screening tool. It is not a measurement instrument for safety-critical decisions. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something.
Your Thermal Camera Is Only as Good as the Other Tools You Bring
Another mistake from my earlier years: treating the thermal camera as a standalone solution. It isn't. A thermal picture tells you something is hot—it doesn't tell you why.
Last spring, a conveyor coupling ran 8°C above its baseline, and my E86 captured it cleanly. But the image alone didn't explain the cause. An optical fork sensor measuring shaft speed showed the driven conveyor running at 0.7% below setpoint—which pointed to belt slippage, not bearing wear. Different root cause, different repair plan. Without that speed measurement, I'd have ordered the wrong part and scheduled the wrong job.
The electrical side works the same way. A thermal scan flagged a compressor motor running visibly hotter than its twin. Was it overloaded, or just at the edge of its efficiency curve? The answer came from an HVAC clamp meter: 14.2A measured against a rated full-load of 12.5A—13.6% over current. That's an electrical problem, not a mechanical one. The clamp meter told me what the thermal image couldn't.
Fork sensor for speed. Clamp meter for current. Thermal camera for temperature. They don't replace each other; they complete each other. A good inspection kit is a toolbox, not a single hero product.
On the Objection That "One Big Budget Solves It"
Let me address the most common pushback head-on: "Why not just buy the most expensive FLIR camera and cover all bases?"
I've asked myself that question. The answer is that these aren't graded versions of the same tool. The K45 isn't a "better E86." It's a fundamentally different instrument built for fireground use—and in becoming excellent at that, it loses the measurement functions that predictive maintenance requires. Same brand, different species.
The "buy once, cry once" logic holds when you're buying a better version of the thing you need. It falls apart when you buy a different thing entirely.
And to put a fine point on it: my K45 sat unused for eleven months after that 2022 incident. The E86 gets used multiple times a week. I keep a FLIR One in my truck for quick checks. Your return on a thermal camera comes from frequency of use, not from the price tag.
So, Which One Should You Actually Buy?
If I could hand my 2022 self a purchasing checklist, it would have three questions on it:
- What am I inspecting? Fireground or high-heat entry → K-series. Electrical, mechanical, building systems → E86 or comparable. General learning → FLIR One.
- What temperature range and measurement accuracy do I need to form a conclusion?
- What other tools do I already own—fork sensors, clamp meters, contact thermometers—that this camera needs to work alongside?
The honest answer is that the FLIR E86 is the right call for the majority of industrial and commercial diagnostic work. The K45 is the right answer if you're going through smoke, not checking motor bearings. And the FLIR One is the right starting point for anyone who needs to build a business case for buying a serious camera later.
I made my mistake by buying a respected, expensive, completely wrong tool. If you walk through those three questions—and honestly answer the first one—you'll get more useful hours out of your FLIR camera in your first year than I did in my first three.
