A thermal camera detects infrared energy from the surface it is aimed at. It does not use X-ray or radar. That pattern can tell a skilled thermographer something about what is happening behind the wall. But the camera is never literally seeing through the wall. It is seeing the surface temperature, then the thermographer interprets the pattern.

That is not a warning to avoid FLIR. It's a warning to set expectations with the client. If you rely on a thermal image of a wall to guarantee what is inside, you're going to be misled. What you can say is: 'We found a temperature anomaly on this wall surface, and based on the pattern, it may be related to this nearby electrical component or a moisture issue.' That's still valuable. It's just not magic.

When I Would Not Buy Used

For all the savings, there are times I skip used FLIR units entirely. If the job involves a compliance report that requires calibration traceability, I buy new or have the used unit sent to an authorized service center for calibration before it goes into the field. If a seller can't provide the serial number, a sample radiometric image, or the battery condition, I treat that as a red flag. And if the model is so old that replacement batteries are hard to find, the camera is basically disposable no matter how good the price is.

I don't have hard data on how many used FLIR units have weak batteries. Based on the four used units I've purchased since 2019, my sense is that about half need battery work within the first year. That's anecdotal, not scientific, but it's consistent with what our techs have seen in the field.

So here is my honest advice: the best FLIR purchase is the one you fully understand. Buying new is simple.
